What did Benny’s grand-parents look like? What did his aunts, uncles and cousins look like?
– Benny never had a chance to know. These people all perished in the holocaust, along with their photos. Mr. Weismann, however, the next-door neighbor of Benny’s parents, did have in his possession a thick album with photos of his numerous family members. Throughout his childhood Benny loved to drop in on Mr. Weismann, flip through the album, acquaint himself with the faces, and listen to Mr. Weismann’s stories about each and every one of them.
Mr. Weismann passed away early in the ‘80s. Arieh his son, Benny and his parents and a few other neighbors were the only ones who came to the funeral. Where were all the numerous family members, Benny wondered when came to shake Arieh’s hand. Arieh gave him a sad look: You probably mean the people in Dad’s thick photo album. They are not our family. These are photos that other people threw out. Dad used to purchase them at the flee market…
Mr. Weismann didn’t leave any valuable property to his son Arieh. But unknowingly he did leave Benny an outstanding passion to photograph, preserve and adopt to his heart the stories of all other families.
Benny has “families” residing all over the world: in Israel, in the USA, India, Switzerland, Germany and other places. They all keep inviting Benny to take pictures of a yet another wedding and another wedding.
And Benny packs up his heavy equipment, and goes there.
